Crossbite

The Orthodontic Centre

Crossbite

A crossbite refers to a misalignment of the upper and lower teeth when the jaws are closed. This can occur in the front (anterior crossbite) or back (posterior crossbite) of the mouth.

Crossbites can lead to problems such as uneven wear of teeth, jaw pain, and difficulty chewing or speaking.

Correcting crossbites tends to be more effective and easier when managed in young, growing children.

Treatment often involves use of plates but other treatment options may include orthodontic appliances like braces or Invisalign, dental expanders, or in some cases, surgery to correct jaw alignment.

To the left is a classic example of an anterior and posterior crossbite. This patient was treated with an expander and braces by Dr. Katie Xu.
